Uroflowmetry (Urine Flow Test)

Uroflowmetry (Urine Flow Test)

What is Uroflowmetry?
Uroflowmetry is a simple yet highly useful diagnostic test that measures the speed, volume, and duration of urine flow during urination.
It provides valuable information about the functioning of the bladder and urethra.
The test can be performed in both men and women and is especially recommended for patients who experience difficulty urinating or a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying.

Why is Uroflowmetry Performed?
Uroflowmetry is used to diagnose or evaluate:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)

  • Difficulty in urination or interrupted urine flow

  • Sensation of incomplete emptying after urination

  • Urinary incontinence or sudden urgency

  • Underactive bladder (hypoactive bladder)

  • Urination disorders in children

  • Suspected bladder outlet obstruction or narrowing

It also serves as a preliminary test to determine if more advanced tests, such as urodynamics, are needed.

How is Uroflowmetry Performed?
Uroflowmetry is a non-invasive and completely painless procedure.
It is performed using a specially equipped toilet system connected to a measurement device.

  • The patient waits until the natural urge to urinate occurs.

  • Urine is voided into the uroflowmeter’s collection chamber.

  • The device records key parameters such as start time, flow rate (ml/sec), total volume, and duration.

  • After urination, residual urine in the bladder is usually measured by ultrasound.

Data Obtained from the Test
Key measurements include:

  • Qmax (Maximum Flow Rate): The peak urine flow speed.

  • Qave (Average Flow Rate): Average flow throughout urination.

  • Voided Volume: Total volume of urine voided during the test.

  • Flow Time: Duration of urination.

These results help evaluate how the bladder and urethra are working together.

Preparation Before the Test

  • The bladder should be moderately full (neither too full nor too empty).

  • Avoid caffeine or diuretics before the test.

  • Any urinary tract infection should be treated prior to testing.

After the Test

  • The procedure is completely natural, and no pain or discomfort occurs afterward.

  • Results are evaluated the same day, and additional tests or treatment plans can be recommended if necessary.

Uroflowmetry at Our Clinic
At our clinic, uroflowmetry is performed using modern computer-assisted devices.
Data is analyzed immediately by the physician and results are explained in detail to the patient.
This test is a reliable and quick method for the early diagnosis of prostate enlargement, bladder muscle dysfunction, or urinary flow obstruction.
